The history of Robinson's Flooring at Thomasville at River Park is a story about a small town young man, furniture, and floor covering.
It begins about 30 miles south of Fresno in Hanford, California. In the late-60s, fifteen-year-old Mike Robinson, went to work for Gordon and Pat Blue who owned Hanford Furniture. For the next 14 years, Mike worked hard setting up displays, running deliveries, and making sales. He never took a vacation, and he learned a whole lot about the furniture business.
Finally, at 29, he took a vacation or what he calls the “trip of a lifetime!” Mike spent three months traveling around Europe. When he returned to Hanford, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. So he volunteered for a year at a camp for troubled boys. To support himself, he started a side business as a contractor installing draperies.
Although Robinson's Flooring opened at the height of the Great Recession, the store was an immediate success, exceeding all expectations.
Because Mike Robinson and his staff have longstanding connections with the mills AND because the physical arrangements mean lower-than-low overhead, Robinson's Flooring is able to give customers very competitive prices on even the highest quality floor covering.
Professional. Friendly. Genuine.
We believe our success is due to our commitment to serve each and every customer in a highly professional and genuinely friendly manner.
As customers purchased furniture in the Thomasville store, the subject of floor covering invariably came up. It was a no-brainer for Mike Robinson to offer his 30+ years of flooring experience within the Thomasville store. Mike recruited the best and most knowledgeable floor covering talent in Fresno. With the team assembled, Robinson's Flooring at Thomasville at River Park was opened. It was 2009.
This store grew into the successful Robinsons Interior Carpet One.
Mike’s eldest son, Rusty Robinson, followed his father’s example and also went to work for Hanford Furniture, which later became Hanford Furniture Thomasville. After many successful years in Hanford, Rusty and owner, Pat Blue, decided to expand to Fresno and open Thomasville at River Park, which immediately flourished.
Soon people were asking him to do more than install draperies. They wanted him to design the draperies and order them. They also wanted him to provide carpet. People trusted Mike.
Robinson recalls, “One day, when my garage was full of carpet and my spare bedroom was full of draperies, I went down to Chinatown and rented a space. I started my floor covering business with a $35 investment and a handshake with my landlord.”
He shared one desk with his secretary and had one installer to help him. That was in 1980.
